I’ve attended my last Frederick Keys baseball game until I can be sure I won’t be subjected to the pathetic Cowboy Monkey Rodeo spectacle. What does this act have to do with baseball, and who can possibly enjoy watching those frightened monkeys riding dogs who are chasing sheep? It’s like a flashback to the 1950s and the promoter’s self-serving assurances that the show is not abusive are absurd. The fact that the monkeys have to be tied to the dogs should be enough to convince anyone that the poor animals are not willingly participating.

Our city and our team are better than this. Let’s forgo the abused monkeys and choose entertainment that better reflects the spirit and fun of America’s pastime.

Thank you for keeping this issue in the media. It really is a black mark on Frederick to allow this disgusting show to continue.

I am also a lifelong baseball fan and a Frederick County homeowner who would love to attend Frederick Keys games - but not until these cruel monkey rodeos are ended. Primate experts including the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance, the Humane Society of the United States, and Barbara J. King have all presented evidence that these acts are abusive to monkeys. Pat O'Conner, President and CEO of Minor League Baseball, has said: “Minor League Baseball neither supports nor encourages the practice of using animal acts of any kind, especially animal acts for which the Humane Society has expressed serious concerns, to entertain our great fans.†The Frederick Keys are one of the last few teams in the U.S. to continue holding these cruel and outdated acts. Our city is absolutely better than this, and it is high time to say NO to all future monkey rodeos.

CaryFrederick

Thank you and well said!

I thought we were given dominion over the Earth and all of its creatures to do with what we will. If we do not dominate them, are we not violating our mandate?

lives4running

Good grief, and who do you think decided that man had dominion over animals?!

cleanrunoff

No idea- they told us this in church and did not allow any questions. Gotta take it on faith, I guess.

Yah, we have dominion over the animals... except for the pigs and shellfish... because of diseases if you don't cook them well enough.

Jim Hartley

I too would never attend an event with such “entertainmentâ€. Ugh.

CaryFrederick

Thank you!

Oh Cary monkeys strapped to dogs running around a baseball diamond is considered abuse. But the tens of thousands of 💠killed each year in the name of medical research is ok. I know, I know, if it means they we're killed in the attempt to eradicate diseases and enhance the life and longevity of humans its acceptable. Just don't let them ride dogs before sending them to NIH.

shiftless88

Neither is great but at least one is focused on being productive rather than entertainment.

Obadiah Plainsmen

As the saying goes, laughter is the best medicine.

CaryFrederick

Oh I completely agree. Dogs should never be tested on. No animals should. I also work to end that horrible abuse. Thank you for your comment. -Cary

Cary, please propose a validated method to replace animal models in ADME/toxicology studies in new drug development. Currently there are no validated in-vitro methods available for legally mandated studies. Would you be the first to stand in line for an experimental treatment that was not first studied for toxic effects in animal models?

cardona996

This is a perfect example of people expressing their feelings and trying to pass them on as facts. If you truly believe that these animals are being abused I hope you called the Frederick County Animal control office to report it. Here is the link just in case you haven’t done so yet. https://frederickcountymd.gov/122/Report-Cruelty Also do you honestly think that a monkey who has the ability to swing and jump from tree top to tree top, 15 feet at a time, is going to be rattled by riding a dog across a baseball field? My opinion is that these monkeys have a great life with their owners and are well taken care of. I also think that they enjoy the riding the dogs. Maybe the dogs are being abused as well by being subjected to the humility of hundreds of people watching them being used as a little horse for the monkeys!

shiftless88

This echoes what people used to say about slaves

public-redux

You should see how happy they are.

gabrielshorn2013

Oh come on shiftless, that comparison is silly. If we keep cows fed and comfortable, shall we not milk them? Shall chickens that are kept fed and safe not be used for food? Linking a monkey rodeo to slavery is a non-sequitur.

shiftless88

I was merely pointing out that the rhetoric used by defenders was similar. It is. Especially the bit about "I think they look happy" and a total non-acknowledgement that this might be an issue (not to mention I am pretty sure he cannot tell the difference between a happy monkey and a sad monkey).

CaryFrederick

I know Sgt. David Luckenbaugh with Animal Control. I contact him when I see abuse but thank you for the contact information anyways. It’s time we stop using animals for entertainment. Plain and simple.

threecents

No more dog shows or zoos?

petersamuel

Fredneck fun.

lives4running

Further, you have the choice whether or not to buckle your seatbelt. Those animals had no choice. It is animal abuse, plain and simple. Pathetic.

lives4running

Totally agree, rlc. Not even close, threecents. Seatbelts are the law. You have a choice whether to ride in the car, or not.

I am a vegetarian because I think it is abusive and an inefficient use of resources to slaughter animals for food. The people who write in are probably fine with us slaughtering billions of animals, so I find it comical that they horrified about monkeys they know nothing about. Have you even seen the monkey cowboy rodeo?

CaryFrederick

This person who wrote in, Cary, is vegan. I work to help end extreme confinement in factory farms. I work to strengthen laws to protect animals. I work to help end puppy mills. What’s comical about caring for both the billions of animals slaughtered each year and a few monkeys and dogs that I happened to come across recently?

threecents

The comical thing is the monkeys and dogs, as they are not suffering or being killed. You see the difference?

threecents

Cary, Have you tried a Beyond Burger yet? They are at Wegmans and The Silver Diner, and yes they are amazing.

threecents

Would the analogy work better for you if I had a 3 year old the car?

threecents

Sorry, a 3-year old IN the car - buckled up. The poor miserable child strapped in against its will.

rlc5495

This shouldn't be allowed to take place anywhere. I also urge people not to attend until we have assurances that the Keys will never present this so-called "entertainment" again.

To me the cross-over between what is reasonable and what is "abuse" is when an animal is being forced to do things that are completely against its nature. It is not like these monkeys normally ride on the backs of other animals in the wild.

public-redux

But now that they know, Planet of the Apes.

gabrielshorn2013

Forced? Is training an animal to perform a task abuse? Is training a dog to perform in Obedience or Agility Trials abuse? They wouldn't normally do it, but once trained, love it. Then there is the food issue. Becoming our food is definitely against their own survival interests, yet we merrily go off to Burger King for a Whopper, or to Chick-fil-A. The important thing is that in either case, the animals are treated well. Check out the Animal Welfare Act for details.

shiftless88

Actually agility and Trials are very much in line with what animals do in the wild, just more structured. They run and jump and dodge things. Ever watch a fox or wolf move?

gabrielshorn2013

Yep, often. Our dogs also do obedience and agility.

CaryFrederick

Gabrielshorn2013- I have checked out the animal welfare act many times. FYI- Tim "Wild Thang" Lepard, who runs the Monkey Rodeo under the name Team Ghost Riders, has been cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for violating the Animal Welfare Act. At one point, his truck lost a muffler on a road trip and all his animals died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

threecents

Cary, Have you verified that without using the so called fact sheet from the Humane Society?

nelsonel

Agree 100%. Monkeys are wild animals, even if they've been bred in captivity. They should be treated with respect, not strapped to a running dog so children and immature adults can laugh at them. Aside from the inherent cruelty, "monkey rodeos" are low-brow entertainment and aren't a good look for the city.

CaryFrederick

Thank you. It’s embarrassing for Frederick.

CaryFrederick

Don’t worry, I’m on top of that too.

CaryFrederick

Thank you!

threecents

The fact that you wear seat belts should be enough to convince anyone that you are not a willing passenger and are terrified to be in a car.

User1

Is the FNP trying to “beat a dead horse†by continuing to publish these letters on the same topic weekly? We just had this come up last week. I’m sure there is plenty of other “news related†letters in their in box.

CaryFrederick

I got in the car myself. I buckled myself up. The monkey didn’t choose this. He didn’t decide to do this on his own. Horrible analogy.

gabrielshorn2013

So is that the new standard Cary? The animal didn't choose it? Do animals choose to be guide dogs for the blind? Companion animals for the medically infirm? Subjects for testing ADME/toxicology in medical treatments before administration to humans as required by law? Being food?

gabrielshorn2013

Maybe three. Or you don't want to get the $83 fine for not doing so.
