On July 7, along with many millions of others, I watched the U.S. win the Women’s World Cup. These women are fantastic athletes. I am not usually a soccer fan, but I surely must admire their spirit and athletic ability. What I can’t understand is how or why they were snubbed by their own government. All Americans should be ashamed.

President Macron of France was there; the game was played in France. William Alexander, king of the Netherlands, was there, to cheer his team on. I did not expect President Trump to be there, but neither was Jamie McCourt, our current ambassador, nor second at the embassy, the deputy chief of mission.

As an American, I am offended by this lack of courtesy to our own people at this level.

It is always nice when the team gets support, but maybe - just maybe, the ambassador had more important things to do.

Blueline

I'm not ashamed in the least, in fact I prefer politicians to be performing their jobs first. The truth is, soccer isn't that popular in US to begin with. Would you expect the President to attend the Frederick Keys game if they play for the Carolina League Championship?

public-redux

Perhaps the mayor, as the representative of the owner of the stadium.

Dwasserba

Thank you for recognizing women as "people".

threecents

DW, Wow, since when are women people? I had no idea. Men are people too, right? But men and women have different soccer leagues because... I will let you finish that sentence.

MD1756

It's just a game people. I just don't understand why people pay so much to watch other people play games. Why should a US representative be there but not be at some science competition? Why should sports teams get invited to the White House just because they won some games (and I'm talking about any sport and any gender)? The women's salaries for sports shouldn't be brought up the the men's, rather it should be the other way around. I have to suffer a high cable bill to pay for all the sports I don't want to watch on TV. Put sports in its proper perspective. It's only games.

DickD

Because we like to watch games, MD? And you don't have to pay cable TV, you can get free over the air TV. Not the cable networks, but those are the ones you don't want.

MD1756

It's cheaper to bundle unless you're a brand new customer. I mostly watch the free "over the air" channels. The picture quality/reception at my house is better when I use cable. I wish the companies were forced to offer a package without sports or a decent "menu" option then I wouldn't have to pay for something I don't want to get something I do (free TV channels without all the interference/poor reception). I haven't tried/didn't know about the technology you mention, but I do still wonder about phone and internet alone are cheaper. It's not easy getting a good price from verizon if you're an existing customer. But that still doesn't negate the fact that I believe all top tiered sports people are overpaid to play a game and they don't warrant all of the attention they get (same goes for Hollywood types). I'd rather see engineers, scientists, doctors, nurses, teachers, police/fire/rescue, etc. get more money and more attention.

MD1756

Dick, I just checked out the reviews for LiveWire and it looks like it is a waste of money, so stay with the cable but give us an option to ditch the sports channels.

DickD

You don't even need an outside antenna, MD.https://www.getlivewaveantenna.com/en/pre-2.html?fomo=1&et=0&Affid=1598&s1=aae4656b-f482-4a8c-98b3-3fdbea147223&s2=wF463HVICJJJVDQNH2EIT4J0&s3=&s4=1441&s5=08f5c7ef5f794c95adac4003c5999818&domain1=www.frstbte.com&network_id=69"LiveWave™’s advanced PATENTED technology turns the wiring in your entire home into a MEGA ANTENNA! Hello. The women's team made headlines mainly because they offended the rest of the world by running up a score and over-celebrating goals (bad), demanding better pay, and offending Trump (good). What about the men's team??? Where is your concern about them? They made it all the way to the finals but got almost no coverage here. At least they were paid well...

shiftless88

The mens team has not made it to the world cup finals ever. The best they did was 1930 when they got third. They've barely cracked the top ten since then, once. The women's team, on the other hand, has respect around the world as winners.

Dwasserba

Yep. Because the women have *won* four times. Four. 4. More than three.

threecents

Yah, they won against women... [scared]

public-redux

Why, that’s practically cheating!

butterflygirl

The men’s team did not even participate in the World Cup. The team did not even qualify. Better pay? Do you even know the difference between the money for women and men? Next World Cup: Men: $400 million. Women: 60 Million.

DickD

OMG, Time to change sex.

threecents

I don't watch soccer, so I am just guessing here, but maybe the men are generally paid more because they are generally better players. [ohmy]

gabrielshorn2013

Not at all three. The men are paid more because the revenue for men’s soccer is much higher. Megan McArdle had a great article in the WaPo about the subject. Simply put, viewers vote with their eyes, which causes sponsors to vote with their pocketbooks. The women were paid a higher percentage of total revenue than the men are.

threecents

[thumbup]Thanks Gabe. Even I was starting to buy into the anti-woman discrimination theory going around with women's soccer.

User1

Actually paid LESS!!! Woman’s World Cup = $73Million In revenue, players paid %13 of the pot. Men’s World Cup = $4Billion in revenue, players paid 9% of the pot!!! If the women want more money then they need to increase their revenue base to include more than soccer moms and children. More people watch men’s sports than women’s. So do you hear the men complaining about being paid less?

Quisling

Finals of the Gold Cup not the World Cup.

threecents

World Cup, Gold Cup... Like most Americans, I don't follow soccer, much less women's soccer. [ninja]

public-redux

"Running up the score." It would have been patronizing to not play to the best of their abilities against Thailand. Everyone had their big girl pant on. The world was not offended.

threecents

The combination of running up the score and over-celebrating the late scores offended many who supported the other teams.

public-redux

They over-celebrated. They didn’t run up the score. Like the Thai team, they played to the best of their abilities. You know that scoring differentials count in case of a tie in the standings, right?

But let’s consider your assertion. At what score should the US team have refused to attempt another shot on goal?

User1

Maybe because the men’s team didn’t raise a fuss about their winning or make it all about something else instead of the win.

veritas

It appears you are easily offended, Mr. Alter.

Why in the world should WE feel ashamed? The American public, well, most of us anyway, have supported the womens team from the very beginning. The American public should feel nothing but pride in these women.

User1

Proud of their win but not with the actions of the few.
