Frederick County Public Schools needs to close on April 28, 2020, for primary elections. They say they need to take a holiday off the calendar to make up this day. Why do they constantly feel the need to have that day come from family-oriented holidays? Fair Day has become a local holiday where our communities bond and build relationships.
According to the teachers contract: “Teachers will be provided a day at the end of each quarter to focus on evaluation of student work. ... Deviations will only occur when there are systemic requirements. Teachers will be permitted to work from home or an alternate location …”
Why upset tens of thousands of parents when the solution seems easy? Make the April worksession April 28 (this year, it’s April 5). I see no valid reason why teachers can’t have their work session and voting at the same time. The contract says the work can be performed at an “alternate” location or home.
FCPS and the Board of Education seem to get some sadistic joy out of threatening to remove family holidays and traditions.
