I was very frustrated after reading The Frederick News-Post‘s Wednesday editorial (“Time to move forward on hotel-conference center project”) on the planned hotel-conference center project in downtown Frederick.

While you laud the value and benefits of the use of taxpayer money in other public projects around the state, you insert, almost as an afterthought, that the Randall family is not donating the land for this project but will be selling it to the project developer for its fair market value. What’s “transparent” is your hypocrisy on this issue.

Remembering all the editorials you published that were critical of Blaine Young and his pro-business attitude just adds to my frustration. If the Randall family is so excited about this project and “the benefits it will bring to Frederick”, why doesn’t it donate the land for this hotel? The money saved by doing this can be used for other purposes on this new development. It would be nice to see them putting their money where their mouth is.

Follow the money, unfortunately it's business as usual in Frederick. Not much has really changed at all. How absolutely disappointing 😬

Hypocrisy? Lots of that to go around. How about those who argue against the Hotel for contributions? or those in the county that want to put the city in its place? Where ever that might be. Save the money for schools and roads and such? Good idea, but it will never happen. Use it or lose it.

If the Young$ think it is appropriate to use taxpayer$ dollar$ so the Randall$ can sell contaminated property to the city and the Plamondon$ can build a private hotel and conference center, put it to a vote. Let city, county, and state taxpayer$ have a voice. Put it to a vote.

John, although I agree with you, what do the Randalls owe the Plamondons for a reason to donate their property. Now if you advocate just donating it to the City, that would make sense, but most likely the Randalls had a lot to do with this whole deal and they want as much money as they can get. Selling it to the Plamondons, pre approved and price agreed upon is worth far more to them and they know it.

Better yet, John, why not use their own money with no taxes, then none of us will have a problem.

So back during the last group of county commissioners many republicans were all for selling the nursing homes because "why should tax payers be paying for the care of our seniors", and because "govt should not be in the nursing home business".

And now many republicans are in full support of using govt money to subsidize a private business venture!!!!!

This is just unbelievable

I saw that. I like that building as is and I bet there are nonprofits that would agree, but I like having a local paper and if this is how they want to do it, it's theirs. Too many papers are crashing and the fnp is valiantly trying to stay afloat, like a chameleon in a forest that changes colors every day. Other places I care about, wrote about, wrote for, now have generic papers and the online versions are just awful. So backward. I can't move again.

Well said John and to boot, the property is tainted with arsenic and other toxins that the new owner ( Frederick City ) will have to fork over yet more money to abate the land before it can be built on ...this is shameful and the FNP is using its power of the press to force this to a terrific conclusion ...for them!....and laughing all the way to the bank

The rich don't get richer by giving things away. That's why they are rich, they know the value of money. Fair market value is by its name fair.

DickD

Except when using our taxes as part of the sale to inflate the true value.

The FNP and the Randall family will "benefit to a degree". The answer to your question is that the rich do not get richer by "donating" anything, John. This project reeks and the hypocrisy of the FNP is on display for all to see. Next editorial just skip the token "full disclosure" tripe.
