I invited Zakir Bengali to my neighborhood coffee klatch recently to help my neighbors learn about this candidate’s excellent qualifications to continue on the Frederick County Board of Education.
I know Bengali through my church. As a recently retired Frederick County public school teacher, I was glad to let my neighbors know about this highly dedicated and intelligent candidate. Bengali impressed the seven senior citizens with his far-ranging knowledge of educational issues and well-thought-out solutions.
To Bengali’s way of thinking, the U.S. educational system has fallen behind the world standard. He hopes to help bring Frederick County back up to par. We were also impressed with his varied experience in American public education affairs, such as in his service to develop the middle school science standards, his concerns about the students in the less wealthy areas of our county, as well as his interest in hiring and retaining highly gifted educators. He raised his own two children in Frederick County public schools so they could learn about all aspects of real life, as well as get a good academic foundation. Bengali also shared some background on his professional career as a scientist and his passion for decisions based on well-researched data. We all enjoyed hearing his thoughtful positions.
I wish Bengali great success in the upcoming election and in his continued service on the Board of Education for Frederick County. Our local coffee klatch was a great exercise in respectful discussion and participatory grass-roots democracy.
