To the older gentleman who was behind me at the self-checkout at Giant Eagle on Tuesday, May 14, I don’t know what your hurry was. You were pushing me out of the way before my receipt even printed out and started sending your groceries down before I got mine bagged. Most of the time folks have the courtesy to wait till people get their stuff bagged before they start scanning an order. However, you had me so discombobulated that I left my $20 change behind. You know you could have turned it in at the office instead of taking it. And the store confirmed via their cameras that you took it. I can no longer call you a gentleman.

It's fascinating to read this comments and see how many people don't think the man did anything wrong in being discourteous and stealing the woman's money. Amazing what self-centered slobs many of us have become.

mrnatural1

Well said Brookhawk! [thumbup][thumbup]

Ms. Shank I'm sorry you experienced this. As you can see from many of the comments to your LTE, the elderly male who treated you so rudely and even went as far as to steal your $20, is not alone in failing to practice civility. Frederick County, and the region as a whole, has experienced, in the past half century, a marked decrease in the practice of courteous behavior. Regardless of socioeconomic standing, most youth in Frederick County were taught basic civic skills that were practiced and enforced by family and community (yes, as youth our community helped raise us correctly). Some families in the area still teach and hold their off spring responsible for good behavior and courtesy. However, the affluence or self perception thereof seems to have some believing they are entitled to treat others rudely and with disdain. This speaks more to their deficits than to those they badly. The loss of $20 is significant to some of us, but please don't let this incident jade you; keep doing the right things.

Great comment mdcommuter!

This is a perfect example of how population growth and overdevelopment continue to reduce our quality of life here in FredCo.

Brookhawk

Nothing to do with it. Discourteous people have been around all along. It's just now the current political climate is allowing more people to let that out. It's now a badge of "winning" to bully people around. Apologies are a sign of weakness. Frankly, I'll keep trying to be courteous - I'm not a slob.

mrnatural1

Brookhawk, I agree with everything you wrote, except "Nothing to do with it." Generally speaking, people in rural areas and small towns (areas with lower population density) are more friendly, polite, and courteous than people who live in more impacted urban areas. As FredCo has become more and more developed, and attracted more people from the Baltimore and D.C. areas, there has been a decline in civility and our overall quality of life.

Not everyone can handle the hurly-burly world of self checkout.[unsure]

Is there a way the FNP can be nominated for a nationwide award for approving and publishing the “Most Abusrd LTE” of 2019???

huskycats

Thank you Samantha for your post. It is not alright to mistreat people and steal their money. These clowns with their smarmy posts show just how low some people in this country have sunk to.

public-redux

At least now I know how to get $20 from Ms. Shank.

Business Owner

Why was this published?

KellyAlzan

I was wondering that too.

DickD

Gentleman? I would call him a petty thief. Get the surveillance cameras and turn him in!

olefool

Same thing happened to me at walmart one day. I just pushed her stuff of the counter onto the floor and blocked her from scanning her card until I slooooowly bagged by stuff up and walked away. She was livid, but who cares....

KellyAlzan

And you lived?????

Samanthapowers

well done, ole.

des21

Wow. You are a narcissistic ole fool aren't you. If her man was around he would have punched you in the nose. If it was Samantha she would have done it herself (she seems to have a very high testosterone level.)

Samanthapowers

Lack of common decency, respect for others opinions, self respect are all common themes represented by some of the posters to this article. It is not that difficult (except for the below) to demonstrate courtesy. So lame.

awteam2000

Samantha [thumbup][thumbup][thumbup][thumbup]. The comments in this thread are simply shameful.

What is so horrible? Someone writes a LTR whining about a man who clearly has a mental problem or disability of some sort. And then, the writer states that she had the store review the video. That speaks volumes about the writer herself.

This LTE is not a story about an adult pushing a child out of the way. It’s from an adult who can’t understand that not all humans are perfect

des21

Now if only Samantha could demonstrate those qualities here...………….[beam]

I've stopped a couple of people like the elderly gentlemen a couple times while bagging my groceries. (Was there a point in letting us know that he was elderly?) Not that big of a deal. People make mistakes. If you thought he was doing it purposely, you could threaten to take his groceries. And did you really get the store to review video tape over $20? I am impressed.

Dwasserba

Older people take meds that sometimes suddenly affect bodily functions so there can be unexpected hurrying they'd rather not explain. Just know that. For one. For two, $20 is not chump change to everyone.

threecents

Yes, I was inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt because of his age, but the letter writer was obviously not.

KellyAlzan

Exactly three. When stuff like this takes place, I feel sorry for them and just presume they have some sort of a disability. And go on about my life

threecents

And I never said $20 is chump change - only that I was surprised Giant Eagle would review tape over such a small amount... - OK I guess it did sound like I was calling it chump change... Never mind.

KellyAlzan

If you have a personal issue with another human being, crying about that person in a letter to the editor is not a healthy way to contend with it. I suggest you discuss it with a friend, or familiar member, or talk to your church pastor, or your psycho therapist

Psizzle

People who use cash anymore are the ones wrong with society, especially at a self checkout. Use a card. Bank the points and pay your bill and avoid interest..geez

threecents

The Giant Eagle machines are good with cash and giving change.

America 2019 has no time for losers who can't hang. The guy behind you was a winner- he had no time to wait for your slow tail, I'm sure he was a productive businessman busy making $$$ and creating jobs, while you float along in a fog of irresponsibility. Get out of the way or get run over, America has no time for lallygaggers. We have winning to get to.

Samanthapowers

Congratulations- dumb comment of the day. At least you accomplished something today. Run over? A real key board warrior

People like you are what is wrong in today’s society.

KellyAlzan

People like me? Who just bite our tongue and live our life? The man may have a social anxiety condition. One out of 5 have mental illness. She should be praying for him and sending positives vibes his way, instead of paying him rent in her mind.

Maybe it’s negative people like you, bunny.....

Kelly is always stirring the pot, but usually has a good point too. I often think back on a situation and wish I had a little more empathy in the moment.

Get over yourself Kelly. Ps - you’re not exactly a non-whiner yourself.

Gabe, I’m sorry your mind is of a different intelligence level than mine. Too outta Think about what I wrote for a bit before responding?

gabrielshorn2013

Yeah, I get it Kelly. You like to be controversial and stir the pot. Comment still stands.

KellyAlzan

And gabe, you been trolling my participation here for a couple of years now. You have yet to understand the points I’m making in my comments and your replies to me are always way off base. Truthfully - you’re comments are nothing to me. Doesn’t matter if you’re comments still stand or not not me. I just don’t care, I really don’t!

This LTE is stupid. Its something you’d see on Facebook.

gabrielshorn2013

Troll you? Hardly Kelly. I respond to you just as you respond to me, and I have always been respectful. Don't want a response? Simple, don't post. You say you don't care, yet you choose to respond. Hmmmm.....

mrnatural1

Kelly,

I'm surprised you are being so hard on this lady.

Of course there are two sides to every story, but based on what she posted, the man in line behind her was very rude -- and then he stole her $20! How is *she* the bad guy here?

Someone else suggested that the guy might have had to use the bathroom. If so, the thing to do is -- go directly to the bathroom and then return to the checkout!

I honestly do not understand all of the criticism being directed at the OP. There's nothing wrong with pointing out unacceptable behavior, and I see no reason why a person should not submit a LTE about it. Those who are upset over it should take it up with the FNP. They chose to publish it.
