A suggestion to county leaders: Place library opening near the top of the list for the next epic snow. I visited the Middletown branch on Wednesday afternoon to find a parking lot plowed from curb to curb and the pavement bone dry, but try as I might, my intonations of “open sesame” were in vain in front of an unyielding closed library door.

With schools closed for days on end, it’s just possible that some students might have garnered a bit of learning at their branch library had they been able to get in.

Once you give employees liberal leave it is hard to keep services like libraries open. There is usually some kind of minimum staffing required, and the lots and sidewalks need to be in really good shape to avoid lawsuits from people slipping and falling. Libraries are NOT essential services. It is better to focus on keeping the roads clear than to constantly work on clearing the library parking lots.

You don't see stores and restaurants closing down, just the government, that should tell you something,

Yah, Dick, It tells me a lot of people are keeping the plowers from clearing the roads and don't care if they put themselves and others in danger. The government was closed Monday through Wednesday for good reason. I think the libraries were open Thursday and Friday - when schools remained closed, right??

Makes sense to me to have the library open, but I guess a County snow day for all includes the library. They certainly are lucky they don't live where you get a lot of snow and cold. Growing up it was typical to not see road pavement most of the winter.

Jim, Sorry that is a bad idea. If the streets are not clear then we don't want people driving to the library, including those who work there.

I agree, three.
What a terrible idea.

What do you do, hibernate in the winter? lol

Because the staff live at the libraries.
