As I read Miss Weller’s opinion piece in Thursday’s paper I was amused that it took her only 10 paragraphs to get to her real agenda of attacking President Trump and all the evil Republican Senators.

She blames Trump and the Republicans for increasing the national debt. Where was the outrage when the previous administration dramatically increased the debt?

She states that the Republicans are spending way too much time to make our lives worse.

She blames the Republican Senate. What has the Democratic House accomplished except for the constant investigations into President Trump? What meaningful legislation have they passed that is going to help all of us?

This makes me think back to the good old days of the previous administration when everything was open and honest. Loretta Lynch meeting privately with Slick Willy (Former President Bill Clinton) on the tarmac “talking about grandchildren “during the heat of the election.

And don’t forget Hillary Clinton and her 30,000 deleted emails, many of which were said to have had high security clearance that were on her personal email. Her assistant Huma Abiden also had access to many of these as did her husband disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner.

The Benghazi attack that never was fully investigated due to the influence of Hillary, Obama, Loretta Lynch and others.

The ineptitude of FBI Director James Comey and others under his direction, too numerous to list.

Ah, I wish for the good old days when the administration was honest and looked out for the electorate.

I think it is worth pointing out to this LTE author that most of the investigation around Benghazi was carried out by republicans in congress so if he feels that a thorough job was not done then point the finger at the correct place. It's like people now asking why Congress isn't investigating Biden; Republicans controlled the House for years so why didn't they do it? Oh, that's right, they only investigate someone if they are running for office.

olefool

The trouble with rik, des and others here is that they can't count higher than 35%, and they think that is the number that wins elections. They fail to grasp the fact that they are not the only people who vote. Their persistent disturbing preoccupation with HRC causes them an often unreasonable idea or feeling that mentioning her will somehow serve their purposes or acquit Trump of all his criminal and immoral activities. Don't count your chickens before the eggs hatch.

DickD

And Hillary beat Trump last time and isn't running this time. Do you think we should tell them?

rikkitikkitavvi

Darn that Constitution. Hahahahahaha

rikkitikkitavvi

I bet that 35% poll came from a wehateTrumptoo network. Polls worked so well in '16 huh foolish one?

phydeaux994

Mr. DeLong, All of the myriad of Legislation passed by the House of Representatives this year is still waiting for “Moscow” Mitch McConnell to introduce it for consideration by the Senate.

She seems to be having a delightful retirement. More power to her and her husband. That being the case, I too was surprised she had so much to complain about. Very common condition around these parts (the FNP) though...…… My Mom would say many around here are "crying with a loaf of bread under each arm." Thankfulness and gratitude don't come easy in Frederick County I guess.

awteam2000

Des21 "crying with a loaf of bread under each arm." I don’t think Patricia Weller’s editorial on 9/20 in the FNP was ‘feeling sorry for herself’ which your mother’s comment expresses. You may want to revisit the editorial.

des21

I thought she was bemoaning the state of our national affairs while enjoying the good life. I'll have to do a quick re-read.

But...But....What about Hillary? What about Benghazi? But...But...Obama-Biden did it! But...But... Fact: 1) Hillary was never president. 2) Obama-Biden are no longer president and vice-president. 3) Trump has also used an unauthorized phone for calling people. 4) Trump's modus operandi is to Deny, Deflect, Destroy. He will never, ever admit that he made a mistake nor will he ever be accountable for anything he does. We have a president who has the emotional IQ of a middle-school bully. 5) We as a country will never move forward if we keep looking backwards (i.e., but...but Hillary, etc., ad infinitum).

A good example of what-aboutism, even dredging up discredited allegations from Russian trolls. And with no defense of Trump's giveaway of tax dollars to our American oligarchs, the fact raised at the top of the letter but never defended. Wonder why not....

DickD

Brian, if you watch Faux News you can get all of the right wing lies. Congratulations, you have succeeded. Are you going to watch the Impeachment? Better change channels it will not be on Faux News

That's for sure.........their viewers are still panting for updates on those 30,000 emails. The deep-thinking "Enquiring "minds" want to know............

What number of "impeachable crimes" is it now, 137 and counting? You people are hilarious with all this hatred for the President. SHE LOST! Move forward. SHE will never be President.

The charge of high crimes and misdemeanors covers allegations of misconduct by officials, such as dishonesty, negligence, perjury of oath, abuse of authority, bribery, intimidation, misuse of public funds or assets, failure to supervise, dereliction of duty, unbecoming conduct, refusal to obey a lawful order, chronic intoxication, including such offenses as tax evasion. Offenses by officials also include ordinary crimes, but perhaps with different standards of proof and punishment than for nonofficials, on the grounds that more is expected of officials by their oaths of office. The word "High" refers to the office and not the offense. Indeed the offense may not even be a breach of criminal statute.See Harvard Law Review "The majority view is that a president can legally be impeached for “intentional, evil deeds” that “drastically subvert the Constitution and involve an unforgivable abuse of the presidency” — even if those deeds didn’t violate any criminal laws."

phydeaux994

rikkitikkitavvi, just a few minutes of research before you comment would save you from embarrassing yourself continually. Of course most of your comments are lamo wisecracks only you think are funny, embarrassing yourself even more (if that is possible). Conviction by the Senate is looking more probable, one Republican Senator said today if the vote was secret 30 Republican Senators would vote to convict him.

rikkitikkitavvi

As opposed to the left wing lies?

MRS M

Thanks to Brian for an insightful letter. As so aptly shown, there really is no justifiable explanation for the current ignorance of about 35% of one segment of the American electorate, what with FOX State TV and FaceBook to be relied upon to accurately report "the news".

BUT, An understanding of American civics? Or how bills become law? (Nope). Understanding or respect for facts vs. lies vs. propaganda vs. "opinions" (just like this letter!)? (Nope). Ability to learn from history? (Nope). Respect for the rule of law, and for those who have devoted their lives to upholding the Law, and the Constitution, in protecting ALL Americans? (Nope). Ability to think independently? Critically? (Nope). Desire for the truth (Nope, Nope, Nope).

The final Benghazi Report was published in 2016. (Some may wish to read it's "findings" as it related to the Secretary of State at the time, and ultimate cost to the American people). There are 50 + House Bills put forth in the 2019 Congressional sessions currently waiting for action from the U.S. Senate. (Some may like to read about these too!). And as for the national debt, perhaps through honest oversight, it was missed that The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget reports that Trump's giveaways are projected to add $4.1 trillion dollars over the next decade to our deficit.

Lets just hope Russia finds those 30,000 emails, as Trump requested on TV.! Nothing could be more critical to the State of our Union today, correct?

hayduke2

Thanks for the response Mrs M... Sadly, it won't be able to penetrate the wall of conspiracies and lies that form the letter writer's wall.

For those who don't recall, the country was in "the Great Recession" when Obama became president, so it made sense to stimulate the economy with tax cuts and government spending. Trump, on the other hand, inherited a strong, steadily rising economy and those Obama era tax cuts, and he decided to cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy and to increase spending even more. So much for Republican fiscal conservatism.

des21

I love the Orwellian quality of Democratic political and economic analysis: "everything was wonderful under Obama. The economy was strong, the debt and deficit did not explode, we know what happened to all that stimulus $$$, everyone loved us internationally, we were kind and welcoming to illegals"- NOT! First rule of demagoguery, if you say something often enough people will simply accept it as true. Sorry folks, sell you snake oil elsewhere.

You are right about one thing though 3- both parties have become equally fiscally irresponsible. Wat can i say, I guess your side won on that issue. Hurray![unsure]

hayduke2

Des said - "First rule of demagoguery, if you say something often enough people will simply accept it as true." Must be referring to things like " no collusion", "witchhunt", "fake news", "enemy of the people", "Dems are socialists", "Hillary", "Biden", "Obama", "Mexico will pay for the wall"' "tariffs are easy", " stable genuis", "I will bring back coal", "I will release my tax forms", " I will be too busy to play golf", "I did not know Stormy", or any of the other 12,000 lies told daily.... Talk about snake oil....

Des, Why you got to be so polar about everything. Absolutely, there was too much spending and tax cutting during the Obama years, and I said so consistently in this forum while they were happening. My point here was that at least there was some reasoning and redeeming factors for them.

public-redux

des, The comment from threecents that you are reading on your device must be different from the one I see. The one I’m reading doesn’t include anything you wrote. I wonder how the FNP does that.

des21

I apologize Pub and 3 for trying to make a broader point. since Trump and the GOP has been talking up the incredible economic recovery over the past coupe years (which is undeniable i think) the Democratic talking points have consistently been "things were just as good if not better under Obama." Or something of that ilk. They never talked about what a robust economy there was when Obama was President because people could look around and say "you're full of it." I did not mean to be held to some transcript Pub, I will watch myself more closely in the future (actually i won't. I engage here for fun, not to be part of some historical record.)

des, in the first graph of this article showing the growth of the GDP. You can select the date you want to start, I chose Nov 2008, and it ends on June 1, 2019, to show the growth of the Obama years through the Trump years. You can show it in many ways, I chose a line graph. You will see that the growth rate for Trump went up at the same rate as it did for Obama. On line you can find comparisons of Obama and Trump in many areas. The Legislation passed by Obama in his first 2 1/2 years is much more than Trump has passed in the same time period. Interesting, since Republicans didn’t vote for any of Obama’s Legislation.

public-redux

des, can you identify even one Democrat was said the national debt didn’t increase under Obama?

I’m a bit worried about you ever since you suggested Google conspired to remove every mention of Obama saying that $4 gas was the new normal. He didn’t say that, you know. He said 2% GDP growth was the new normal. But you went straight for a conspiracy theory.

public-redux

And I’ll agree that the economy, as measured by GDP growth, under Trump has done almost as well as the last two years of Obama and almost as well as 2013-2014. Undeniable, I’m sure you would agree.

Whoops, I meant slightly better for the last two years...

des, With respect to illegal immigrants, I mostly notice Dems pointing out that Obama deported more of them than Trump. Oh, gosh, there I go being accurate again, Silly me.

des21, do you ever actually teach anything??

DickD

Yeah, he has a PHD in politics

[lol]

des21

Yes phy, 6 classes in 6.5 hours. I can walk and chew gum too. [beam] Some people are just really capable I guess.

des21

I find it interesting that every Democratic candidate except Biden is running AWAY from the Obama ";legacy" while old folks here keep defending it as if he were a modern day FDR. Bizarre. Most of the Democratic party realizes that Obama did well for himself but did very little for the US or especially, the Democrat party. Wake up folks!

des21

And as Phy can attest Pub, I'm way too busy to "fact check" everything. I was quoting Rep. Gabbard who alleged that Google had shut down her website after she "gutted" (her term which I thought was a little vulgar) Kamala Harris. All in the interest of accuracy Pub which I know you value and you have the time to be exact in all you do and say.

Which Democratic Socialist will you be voting for next November? I guess whomever the Democratic nominee is will suffice. Too bad they all (except Biden who's a goner with this Ukraine thing) seem to feel the Constitution is what is keeping us from real Democracy. Whether it be the Electoral College of the Supreme Court, they stand in the way of "real" Democracy (see NYTimes 1619 project.) Unwittingly they are setting us up for a coup d'état. As the Greeks pointed out 1000s of years ago, the haves will only stand for the have nots "legally" taking only so much of their stuff before they say "enough." 1% pays 36% of all income tax. Bottom 90% of earners pay roughly the same. We in between pay the other odd third. At what point do you see the tipping point? This is no longer a rhetorical question. Mock and be snide all you like, I'm seriously worried about the future.

rikkitikkitavvi

That's a big load of "stuff" there zero sense. Try marketing that.

[wink]

rikkitikkitavvi

Summary of all the leftist comments on here. "Orange man bad. It does not matter if the country is doing great. She lost. We hate him and his supporters because they voted for him when it was her turn to be President and take this country into third world country territory by allowing open borders and after birth abortion and indoctrination of our youth into what's so great about socialism. Let them eat cake"

threecents

Is it "orange man" or "short-fingered orangutan?" I like to include something about draft dodging, so "Donny Bone spurs" is classic. Now if we could also include losing children of asylum seekers and getting election help from former Soviet countries, that would be terrific. Free "Make America Smart Again" hat for the best new Trump name.
