Barney Fife got it right. In an episode of “The Andy Griffith Show,” he stated that “this badge represents the people of this community.” The badge and the oath taken by the officer behind it are what we should respect, young-looking or not.

Our country has developed various forms of culture over a span of 243 years. We welcome or should welcome different ethnic groups. Modification of our society for reasons that can be interpreted as forced sensitivity should be questioned. One-way streets are hard to navigate in our world. Two-way streets work better.

Beards shouldn't be worn by police officers or at least have strict limits (that goes for mustaches too) if there is the possibility the police officer may need to use a respirator or gas mask. Beards and mustaches may interfere with the fit. When I worked at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, they had strict restrictions for health and safety reasons. Other than that, there should be no restrictions on facial hair or the lack thereof.

Jimmy G -- Huh?

Police officers shouldn’t wear beards? Is that what he is saying? I’m guessing this is a direct slap at Sikhs. If so, I’m sorry to hear that. The author should educate himself as to how the UK has welcomed Sikhs into the police force, and even modified the famous police cap with its checkered hat band into a black turban with a checkered band running though it to accommodate them.

James, are you saying that only men can be police officers, as the quote of Barney Fife implies that.

Sorry, I don't get the point of the LTE or the title.

You are not alone. [smile]

I thought perhaps the FNP edited the letter, but somehow the point was lost along the way.

Those who come here need to adapt to our way of life not the other way around. Does our society gradually change in some aspects to those of other cultures? Of course they do but when they come here expecting us to change they need to think again.

and what exactly is 'our way of life'? talk about ethno and ego centric. get over yourself.

secpol; are you saying that you have adopted native american culture? Cool!

Secpol is a pilgrim. You should see his hat.
