Frederick needs to have a conversation about the big con.

About the truth of how immigrants are being used as a way to divide us. Pitting us against each other is not a solution to our problems — it IS the problem.

So why do we allow ourselves to be led to believe that our neighbors are our enemies? Look carefully.

Who is really hurting our communities? Anyone who raises their voice insisting that we are all “them” versus “us,” that’s who. Be aware of being used as a pawn when choosing a side. Be aware that you are being asked to be a party to driving our community apart. Look, we are all children of immigrants. Your family immigration story has led to you.

Where would you be if someone in your family had not emigrated? What about your neighbor, or the family down the road?

Can we stop exhausting ourselves with divisiveness and spend all that energy on good? Can we have this conversation instead of the one that drives us apart? Imagine what we could all do together if we choose not to be conned.

My grandparents were first generation immigrants into the United States. They did it the legal way. Why can't the rest be the same? There is a U.S. Constitution and laws for a reason ... we CANNOT allow immigration to go unregulated or even mismanaged. How do you think 9/11 and the ongoing wars happened? Why do you think MS13 has taken a foothold in America and murdered so many people? Once you get a grip and understanding of reality, then -- and ONLY then --- will your words be true and mean something.

casting people (almost always immigrants and minorities) as "others" is fascism 101. it is incredibly easy to look back on the rise of fascistic regimes and see how the playbook is being followed to a t. convince enough angry people that their lifestyle is under attack and they will gladly hand over their rights.

Ellen Lerner

exactly my point. Thank you seanjames -- you know your history.

There is a burden placed on citizens who bear the brunt of the costs associated with illegal immigration. To deny this fact is incomprehensible. For instance, crime, illiteracy and poverty are imported with some not all of these aliens. So, why is it so hard for some to ask those who want to come here do so through proper means? There must be some other motivation. There in lies the con.

shiftless88

People ARE trying to come here through proper means. They are not being allowed to do so. Most immigrants throughout history have certainly been poor and uneducated; they didn't leave their countries because their lake house wasn't as nice as their mountain house and "you just can't get good servants in Spain anymore".

Always the joker!

It's hard because people are in danger. Research how long proper immigration takes.

Ellen Lerner

you are correct DWASSERBA -- people are in danger -- they can no longer grow food, because of climate change. They risk death from street gangs. If people think migration is a big issue now, then we need to all hang on to our hats -- it's only going to get bigger. Humanity is in one of it's biggest mass migrations in written history, be it from war, gangs, famine, climate change, ot politics. the con is about diverting our attention from it all - and so we cannot begin to solve it together until we at least acknowledge it.

Ellen Lerner

I'm not sure what the burdens are other than as part of the con game of misinformation. For instance, illegals pay taxes, but never collect tax refunds, and do not use our social safety net unless there is no other choice. We citizens, on the other hand, get $3 back on every $1 we invest in medicare and social security benefits, which includes those taxes paid by immigrants that they did't collect back.. Crime amongst immigrants is notoriously low (either because they don't report it or they behave to avoid being noticed). When there is a crime, it is sensationalized beyond measure, when all it would take is a shorty search on Google to establish a comparison to crimes by citizens. Illiteracy is greater amongst southern whites than it is amongst immigrants, and yes, there is poverty -- but poverty is not a crime last i checked. So I guess my point is.... what burden exactly are you suffering with, other than bearing the weight of a con game.

You ignore the costs of American children born to their parent(s) who are here illegally. The studies do not assign the costs of those children to immigration. We need a true accounting of the costs of illegal immigration then lets see where the chips fall. It won't be so much of a con game if one properly assigns all of the costs to illegal immigrants due to their illegal immigration. As far as paying taxes, if Americans were working those jobs, they'd pay taxes too so it's not like we are getting additional taxes from illegal immigrants and they may not be paying income taxes is their wages are under the table. Apart from the dollars costs there are the environmental and quality of life costs due to the increasing popultion It is of particular concern in this country since we are a rather dirty culture on a per capita basis so the more the population grows in this country through immigration and birth, the worse the problems get.

FCPS-Principal

The burdens are borne by the illegals. They suffer discrimination, lower pay, less take home money, longer hours, fewer rights, inability to vote, and the fear that an ICE raid will happen while they are on their hard-working jobs. Citizens bear none of these burdens.

gary4books

FCPS - I totally agree with you on this.

There would be a bigger burden if they did not come. If you do not think you benefit from illegal immigrants, then you are mistaken.

Ellen, I truly wish that we didn't have this division, but I don't see it ending soon - if ever.

Ellen Lerner

Thank you so much for your thoughts. It does seem such a sad state of affairs for which history keeps repeating itself - our current focus on immigration successfully re focuses attention away from the larger issues that we face -- bait and switch, if you will. I like to think that if people saw it for what it really was, then it would all go away.....All I was asking is that people think about it.

cleanrunoff

I worked long and hard to prepare myself for a lucrative career in either landscaping or animal carcass processing, and i will not easily surrender a lucrative and rewarding career on the line at Tyson foods to some "immigrant" willing to work for less than the $8/hr I have groomed myself for. No more job stealing illegals- these high paying and rewarding jobs are for Americans. Real Americans at that, unlike many born here who secretly despise our great nation.

Brilliant celanrunoff!! so well put!! THank you.

FYI, There is a rather large percentage of immigrants (legal and illegal) in the construction sector, so they aren't just doing low wage work that people living here can't raise a family on.

phydeaux994

I am thinking that if all the illegal aliens are deported, we’ll have to open Trade Schools to teach our youth how to do those jobs.

secpol1970

Interesting that you like many others leave out the key word....LEGAL in regards to immigration. Not a hard concept.

Ellen Lerner

Thank ytou so much for your dialog. My sense of it is that if the disucssion wasn't about "legal" or "illegal", then it would be about something else, and something else after that..... We all run from one issue to the next without giving time to think - no one wins. The issue here is not about legal or illegal -- it is about turning neigbor against neighbor.

MD1756

How about the discussion of overpopulation and its adverse impacts on the planet?

richardlyons

Case in point Ellen.

phydeaux994

secpol, why don’t you organize a meeting with all of the Businesses in Frederick County, perhaps through the Chamber of Commerce, to remind them that it is ILLEGAL TO EMPLOY ILLEGAL ALIENS!!! You could DEMAND that they stop so all the illegal aliens would “go back to where they came from” as Donald has requested. Not a hard concept.

And Secpol, you and your fellow Republicans could start by demanding the Trump and his companies stop hiring undocumented immigrants. Maybe ask yourselves what you don't understand about illegal: The Con.

gary4books

And how many ignore the solution to LEGAL. Fix the laws and leave the workers alone.
