The humanitarian crisis at the Mexico border is a turning point in history. We are at a pivotal moment where the question is before us: What kind of America are we going to be? Are we the America that the Statue of Liberty signifies, the America that lifts its lamp beside the golden door, welcoming immigrants and the promise of a better life? Or are we kind of country that keeps children in cages? The kind of country where ICE rounds up people from their homes? The kind of country where the president and his cronies stand on technicalities about what constitutes a “concentration camp”?
Humanitarian aid is a Band-Aid on a bigger problem. The atrocities Trump and his ilk are committing and turning a blind eye to are legally “justified” under Section 1325 of the Immigration Nationality Act. I call on my members of Congress to commit to striking down this section, and begin the work of moving the nation forward toward the kind of America we can be proud of: a nation of immigrants, a nation of compassion, opportunity and justice. A nation that will give no quarter to bigotry, racism or xenophobia, to say nothing of enacting policies founded in such beliefs.
