The humanitarian crisis at the Mexico border is a turning point in history. We are at a pivotal moment where the question is before us: What kind of America are we going to be? Are we the America that the Statue of Liberty signifies, the America that lifts its lamp beside the golden door, welcoming immigrants and the promise of a better life? Or are we kind of country that keeps children in cages? The kind of country where ICE rounds up people from their homes? The kind of country where the president and his cronies stand on technicalities about what constitutes a “concentration camp”?

Humanitarian aid is a Band-Aid on a bigger problem. The atrocities Trump and his ilk are committing and turning a blind eye to are legally “justified” under Section 1325 of the Immigration Nationality Act. I call on my members of Congress to commit to striking down this section, and begin the work of moving the nation forward toward the kind of America we can be proud of: a nation of immigrants, a nation of compassion, opportunity and justice. A nation that will give no quarter to bigotry, racism or xenophobia, to say nothing of enacting policies founded in such beliefs.

My goodness, there are some hateful, vindictive people here in Frederick. I don't care who built the cage, I don't care who started what, I don't care who's offended. I care that we are holding thousands of people and children in squalid conditions at prices that should have them sitting in The Four Seasons in Dallas. I'm disgusted that you're spending your time and effort discussing this. I have already written to my representatives in Congress, given money to several charities and prayed that God-fearing people see what an atrocity we are performing on our fellow human beings. Hope you don't darken the doorsteps of any religious institution before you've done something to alleviate this suffering.

matthewboh Yours is an understandable perspective to a point. There seems to be some false characterizations and misrepresentations. Two question: First do you believe the Border agents are not doing their best to treat everyone as":humanely" as possible considering the circumstances, and second,: What would you suggest doing differently?

shiftless88

Presidents for decades have managed to do something quite different; do not separate families as a regular policy and do not jail them.

phydeaux994

And cut out the rhetoric the coyotes have used to recruit hundreds of thousands of Central American people who pay them to be bused here to claim Asylum before Donald Trump closes the Border. There were more illegal aliens leaving the Country than there were coming in in 2015 when Trump said “I will build a WALL and MEXICO will pay for it.

It turns out that Christian clergy are profiting from and recruiting migrants.

I wonder if they are True ChristiansTM

You didn't ask me, Jim, but here are two suggestions: 1. More judges, so all seeking asylum can be processed wthin 72 hours, those that qualify would be admitted, those that aren't would be sent home. 2. More aid to Central American countries so they would be happy there, not here. It wasn't until after Trump cut aid to the Central American countries that the immigration to the U.S. surged. Do both and it will be cheaper and more humane than what the Trump administration is doing now.

bgreenway

I am sure the 9500+ who play in that cesspool of secret facebook pages "are doing their best to treat everyone" . Right!

FCPS-Principal

I am sure your letter to your congressman will do a lot of good.

matthewboh

At least I'm trying. Please, offer a suggestion if you have a better idea of how to respond to this horrendous situation.

gary4books

The most pessimistic people are those who say "nothing will help." And give it up to the crooks who take advantage.

Sarahdipity

Matthewboh, absolutely. I've written my representatives this very same letter, along with other letters and faxes, and have donated to ALCU to help fund legal protections to migrants being detained. I'm shocked at the comments on this article, especially the whataboutism and the "Obama did it, too!" crowd. Wrong is wrong; people need to see past party affiliation and skin color to admit it rather than doubling down.

Obadiah Plainsmen

Ms Takacs, where was your outrage when Obama and is ilk build and used cages to house illegals and also used a former Japanese interment{concentration} camp to house illegals? https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/obama-build-cages-immigrants/ https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/migrant-children-internment-camp-fort-sill-847183/ https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-barack-obama-fort-sill-former-japanese-internment-camp-1443785 I Know it was all justified when Obama was doing it!! https://townhall.com/tipsheet/mattvespa/2019/06/12/again-was-there-the-outrage-when-obama-used-a-former-japanese-internment-camp-to-detain-illegals-n2548125

What is Barack HUSSEIN Obama’s “ilk”?

Obadiah Plainsmen

What is your intent in using all caps when spelling Hussein? FNP own rules "TURN OFF CAPS LOCK".

public-redux

Oh, that middle name all caps thing for presidents started up around 2008 or 2009. You must have seen other folks do it. I think that it is a way of showing profound respect to presidents and former presidents. Donald JOHN Trump. Bill JEFFERSON Clinton. Barack HUSSEIN Obama.

public-redux

Anyway, what is his “ilk”?

Sarahdipity

It was wrong then. It's wrong now, and larger in scope. Pointing out lack of past outrage to defend ongoing atrocities is cowardly and fallacious. Know better, be better.

It would also be helpful if you gave an example of an actual threat and distinguish it from your "alleged" threats. Thank you.

Be sure to incorporate this: In Street v. New York (1969), SCOTUS overturned a statute prohibiting flag-burning and verbally abusing the flag, holding that mere offensiveness does not qualify as "fighting words". Remember, you do not have a right to not be offended. Oh, and I seem to be more patriotic than you. Unlike you, I don't want to trash the constitution.

How difficult is it to not appear that you want someone beaten up or killed? For example, if you get that urge again to tell someone that they should be executed by a firing squad, maybe fight it a little harder. Hmm?

rikkitikkitavvi

Let us see how long my 11:55 post last without someone being Offended by it. Guess what, you do NOT have the right to NOT be offended. Freedom of speech. Remember. Oops I forgot no one has the right to free speech within a privately owned business. That would be this wonderful, non-biased newspaper. [wink]

KR, I'm curious for your response to our discussion below.

BunnyLou

Of course, it is a crisis. A crisis denied, unfunded and mocked by the very people who said it was not a crisis (i.e. democrats, people like you). I agree if you don’t like the law have congress change it.

threecents

There is some truth to that, but Trump/Sessions made it clear early on that they wanted the process to be painful and difficult, as a way of discouraging asylum seekers. That was part of their justification for jailing those seeking asylum and putting their kids in warehouses. Trump deliberately also deliberately reduced the number of immigration judges, making the whole process take longer. Unfortunately, the numbers of people trying to immigrate went up, rather than down, and it is a huge mess. I agree that congress should be helping, rather than focusing on blaming Trump for "concentration camps". Everyone needs do their jobs and stop playing politics.

BunnyLou

Your words are hollow without citing some references. How about it?

awteam2000

May 21, 2018, Justice Dept. press conference - Jeff Sessions said “the asylum system is overwhelmed with people making frivolous claims, and President Trump is demanding that families be broken up to stanch the flow of Central Americans to the border.”

shiftless88

This is well documented. A simple search will turn up several quotes.

DickD

If you haven't seen that on TV, Bunny, it's because you watch Faux News all of the time.

Both sides have been talking about reforming the laws and, true to form, not a damned thing has been done. I guess they never heard that actions speak louder than words. D.C. is an embarrassment to world politics.

gary4books

When McConnell allows a vote in the Senate on Immigants and Gueest Workers, we will have a debate and I do hope a law we will all support. As long as Trump's minion will not allow a vote, we will fight for liberty.

Let's try another example. You are in line to buy an ice cream cone. The man behind you says to you, "If you order vanilla, I will beat you up." Opinion on vanilla? Or threat to you?

" The lack of him saying he was going to take an action makes it not a threat." Except he did say he was going to take an action. "I will burn you". Burning is an action, is it not? If it is an opinion, what is the opinion? It seems you disagree with yourself.

An important difference between your speeding scenario and the burning scenario is that speeding is illegal. rikki's comment was in response to a legal activity. The police are ticketing because the action is illegal. How is it not a threat for someone to say, "I will harm you if you do something that you are entitled to do but which I do not like."

KR999

I believe that would be a threat contingent on you actions. Just like if a cop said to you “If you speed I will give you a ticket.” The difference between your scenario and what rikki said is that yours is between two individuals, one of which said he was going to do something in retaliation for something the other did first while rikki only voiced an opinion about what should be done with certain people. The lack of him saying he was going to take an action makes it not a threat. That’s my opinion, and I’m sure you’ll disagree.

This is what we get when people say "I will try anything" and not think about what they will get. I paid 35% mor ein income taxes with the same income and deductions as last year. "They say "tax cut" and expect we will be too dumb to see a "tax increase " on us to pay for the rich to get real tax cuts.
