I was appalled by The Frederick News-Post’s headline “Words of wisdom” over Ed Waters Jr.’s letter stating that “The Democratic Party is the party of hate ... and hate of the nation.” It is the very love of the nation that has made Democrats feel so compelled to be active and vocal as we fear the demise of the principles and ideals upon which this nation was founded and which has allowed it to thrive and become a world leader.
The principles and ideals we are working to protect include balance of power of the branches of government, service to country over personal greed or love of power by our nation’s leaders, free speech and a free and vigorous press, strong relationships with our allies that have worked with us to spread democracy rather than with countries “who pay cash” or house our leader’s business interests, protection of our elections by thwarting rather than seeking foreign interference in our elections, the view of diversity being an asset to our country and the equality of people of all skin types and ethnicities, the importance of separation of church and state and the importance of a well-educated citizenry including in the field of science.
We Democrats do hate and here are some of the things we hate: leaving the world in a worse or dying condition through pollution and climate change, leaving the country worse through increasing debt and widening income inequality, bigotry and sexism, inhumane treatment of children, gun violence, continuous lies by our nation’s leader and the degradation of science.
History does repeat itself. The same argument that those who question the president’s wrongdoing don’t love our nation was promoted in the time of Nixon. It was incorrect and ultimately ineffective then and it is now. It behooves The Frederick News-Post to retract this headline.
