We were surprised and disappointed that The Frederick News-Post did not cover our local climate strike rally, held Friday, Sept. 20, in front of Winchester Hall. It was part of an unprecedented global movement, with millions participating worldwide (which The News-Post also overlooked). The purpose of the rallies was to draw attention to the grave dangers of climate change, which are causing profound destruction to our planet and to us, its inhabitants. The climate strike events are inspired by Greta Thunberg, a courageous 16-year-old Swedish girl whose school strikes have been modeled by young people around the world, because they see their futures in dire peril. Numerous young people attended the Frederick rally and spoke passionately in favor of climate action. Other speakers described climate change threats to our own area. The News-Post, by ignoring this important local event, has done a great disservice to its readers and its community.
