The news of the Shamrock Restaurant in Thurmont closing at the end of the year brought back many wonderful memories of its very festive St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

On St. Patrick’s Day 1978, my father, John Brennan, dressed as St. Patrick in his handmade costume and won the St. Patrick’s Day contest at the restaurant.

Every day I look at a framed photograph in my home of Mike Fitzgerald, longtime owner, and my late father dressed as St. Patrick. It brings a smile to my face when I think of the great food, warm hospitality, terrific service and festive atmosphere at the Shamrock Restaurant every St. Patrick’s Day and every day throughout the year.
