You can’t have a conversation about hip-hop ‘round these parts and not include J Berd, who’s been at it since before some of us were even born.

It’s a combination of that experience, along with a knack for knowing the value of the “less is more” ethos, that makes him one of the area’s most valuable musical assets. He just gets the elusive, indefinable “it” that too many artists often ignore.

Those things are on full display with his most recent LP, “Love Berd,” which was released only a few months ago.

“Duet Yourself,” one of the standout tracks on it, takes his ability to weave a story and drops it on top of a lively, irresistible beat littered with horn stabs. At 2:52, it also reiterates the impact of conciseness, reminding listeners that proving your point in under three minutes isn’t all that bad, either.

“I don’t need coattails/You don’t like it, oh well/You don’t like it, go to hell,” he asserts at the one minute mark. Yet with a song this good, it looks like tickets to heaven will be a hot commodity this holiday season.
