Hear ye. Hear ye. Let the events of Friday the 13th commence!
Indeed, tomorrow marks the day when superstitions abound, black cats crawl around the corner and the weird gets weirder while the premonitions get … well, something. Hey, “premonitions-er” isn’t a word, so don’t blame me. I didn’t invent the language.
Anyway, this weekend’s music slate is highlighted by two very cosmic performances on Friday, so the association fits. We’ll begin with the return of local legend Dustin Davis as he celebrates his birthday in only the way he can: organizing two shows at two venues over two days.
Because nobody said returning to Frederick is easy.
The first of the two nights will be at Cafe Nola and will kick off at 10 p.m. Friday evening. The lineup? How about Thurmont’s Faith In Jane, Philadelphia’s Yuckmouf and then not one, but two — two! — bands from Frederick, Earthride and Weed Coughin, who I can personally attest are some pretty awesome dudes.
The second night of the extravaganza will continue at the Eagles Club on Saturday as Book of Wyrms, Bailjack (aptly described as “heavy blues from the soul”), The Druids and Bone Weaver will take the club’s Designated Music Space. That fun will kick off at 7 p.m. The first of the two nights will cost you five bucks to get in the door, while the second of the two … well, that’s free!
And you can’t beat free.
Actually, speaking of the Eagles Club, that brings us to the other show going down on the night of Friday the 13th, and that will feature Mishima, Natural Rat (which eeks out Book of Wyrms for Band Name Of The Week) and Dumb Valley, which is ostensibly the brainchild of the fabulous Evan Owens of Old Indian fame.
Now, as for those wondering what Dumb Valley sounds like, I am of the mind that their Facebook bio says it all: “Riff-laden rock n roll from Frederick, Maryland, with influences including Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick, Big Star, Motorhead, and the Faces.”
Or, in other words, it’s going to get loud.
As it always is at the Eagles, the rock begins at 7 p.m. and it will cost you a great, big nothing to get in the door.
Elsewhere, we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least note that the Weinberg is in the midst of its annual “Nutcracker” run, which continues through this weekend, culminating with a Sunday afternoon performance. And finally, for the cover tunes set, Bushwaller’s is hosting Triple Lindy Friday, the Alan Scott Band on Saturday and then one of Frederick’s most beloved homegrown talents, Shane Gamble, on Sunday. All those performances will begin at 10 p.m., with the exception of Shane, who in the name of Sunday, will plug in at 9 p.m.
Now, did I miss anything? Of course I did. So, if you’d like to be included in next week’s roundup, email email@example.com. In the meantime (and in between time), put away those ladders (so you can’t walk under them), and don’t look at the moon too long, because you never know what might happen as Friday the 13th looms.
Be safe. Be well.
