A Woodsboro man in his 70s died Wednesday night after he reportedly lost control of his bicycle and fell about 80 feet from a bridge near New Midway.
A group of 10 to 15 bicyclists was riding down a steep hill on LeGore Bridge Road toward the LeGore Bridge over the Monocacy River at around 7:15 p.m., when one bicyclist lost control, according to Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Chad Atkins.
The bicyclist skidded on the tall, stone bridge as he was turning right onto it from the road, Atkins said. The man was thrown from the bicycle as it skidded, falling to his death.
Rescue workers were able to reach the man and tried to resuscitate him, but their attempts were unsuccessful, according to Atkins.
Law enforcement officials say they are waiting to complete an investigation and notify the man’s family before they release his name.
After the man fell, the group of cyclists he was riding with remained at the entrance to the bridge as deputies and fire and rescue personnel investigated.
No one else in the bicycle group was injured and the death remains under investigation, according to Atkins.
