Fatal Shooting

Frederick police officers look for evidence after two people were shot late Thursday night in a parking lot on Columbine Drive off Fairview Avenue. A man was killed, and a woman was critically wounded.

One man is dead and a woman was clinging to life after a shooting in Frederick late Thursday night, according to a Frederick Police Department spokeswoman.

The two were shot in a parking lot at Sunset Apartments in the 1000 block of Columbine Drive in Frederick at about 9:45 p.m., spokeswoman Michele Bowman said.

The man, who was later identified as 31-year-old Frederick resident Gregory Allen Bair Knight, was pronounced dead at the scene. Knight was found in a vehicle.

The woman was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, Bowman said. Police had yet to release her identity as of Friday morning.

Bowman confirmed that the victims knew each other.

Police have no suspects in the shooting. The investigation is continuing.

This story has been updated to specify the victims knew each other and the identity of the man who was killed.

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

As much as I'd like to be able to authoritatively claim that the violent crime rate has a direct relationship to residential development, the stats I've seen show otherwise. Because they do not support my contention, I hereby declare them to be "Fake Stats". [wink]

It is hard to believe the crime rate has actually gone *down* (from 1991 to 2010): https://www.cityoffrederick.com/DocumentCenter/View/853/crimestats?bidId=

Of course, that's all crime. Violent crime could have increased while non-violent crime (the majority of all crimes) decreased. That said, while the only chart I saw for violent crime covers just a few years -- 2002 to 2010 -- it shows the rate dropping: https://www.cityoffrederick.com/DocumentCenter/View/1099/Violent-Crime-2002-2010?bidId=

All I know is that based on the number of FNP articles about gunfire; stabbings; assault & battery; rapes; and murders, it sure SEEMS as though the violent crime rate has increased in the last 30 years.

gabrielshorn2013

Agreed mrnatural. The number one tenant of journalism is "if it bleeds, it leads". These kinds of things are just covered more often because they draw eyeballs.

mrnatural1

Very true gabriel. Of course, that's been the case for decades, if not since printing presses were invented. I've lived in Maryland my entire life, and here in FredCo since 1985. I don't recall there being anywhere near our current level of violent crime back then. Even after accounting for the destructive amount of population growth, the violent crime rate seems to have increased substantially.

2018 Murders Baltimore 309 Frederick 3 Sounds very comparable

girlpolitic

I am puzzled as to why uniformed police officers in the City of Frederick chose to look like military mercenaries instead of presenting an appearance of being approachable law enforcement professionals. The Maryland State Police and the Frederick County Sheriff's Office have maintained a traditional appearance of a police officer. Of course Thurmont PD made up of mostly cast offs of the FPD and FCSO have chosen the militia persona of FPD. Our is it that crime in Frederick is so bad that they have to attire themselves like an occupying force?

mr_twist27

By military appearance are you referring to the navy blue pants and shirts they wear? I didnt realize clothing could be so scary.

Frayou

Common Market coming soon, across the street. (Former Safe Way). Hope they don’t bail out like Walmart did on the mile. Shootings near McDonald’s at 7th street shopping center. Looks like a pattern of increasing shootings too me. Considering we rarely had this problem years ago.

mr_twist27

Actually crime has dropped over the last 10 years in the city, not sure what you are basing your opinion on.

chris

Exactly

Frayou

Consider lived in area for 68 years and witnessed planning policy which encouraged deteriorating conditions. Suggest Statistics should not become a reason for complacency of accepting any level of shooting, let alone murder in any community.

shelleyfreeze1

I have to agree with Kelly regarding the Cactus Flats murder getting swept under the rug! One article. What happened with that? When murders are let go because it looks like our county thinks it's ok, it doesn't help the rate of violence. I do have to disagree with kelly about Section 8 housing and say that is really profiling people. Just because people are poor doesn't mean they are more violent or killers. You would have to show me statistics, but violence covers all socioeconomic groups. The deal is the rich have the money for lawyers to get them off when they do something. Sad that it seems we are seeing violent deaths more in our county. Prayers for all those suffering.

mr_twist27

As much as some of you fearmongers hate to believe, crime in Frederick has actually gone down over the past 10 years despite a population increase. The Frederick Police department's website lists crime stats going back to 2009, the same UCR stats that the FBI has. I challenge anyone to find a similar sized city in the tri state area with a lower crime rate. But hey go ahead and keep up with the "OMG its little Baltimore" and "There are shootings every day!"

Capitano let’s just see how it plays out before you start stirring the racist pot...again.

jayel86

More people cramming in means more dumb people, which means more dumb people with guns. Gun violence doesn't really go up in any area, more people equals more crime.

kstr92

No, Jay, more people cramming in means more trashy people, more crime and more violence of this kind. I suggest you arm yourself.

Samanthapowers

‘More trashy people’? That’s funny. Some of the bumpkins that post on this site are stuck in the good ole days. And they are not trashy?

DickD

This is beginning to happen every day. Liveable Frederick? Marriott Hotel a tourist destination? Forget it, there are plenty of safe hotels outside of Frederick.

KellyAlzan

Yeah dick, I been saying that all along. Downtown Frederick - bullets flying everywhere all the day long. Marriott welcomes you!

rbtdt5

I thought you had a relative that is a cop? Do he/she not know to do their job?

rbtdt5

This wasn't downtown DickD

KellyAlzan

Not “downtown”? Does FCPD know this? Why does the newstory day FCPD is on the case?

rbtdt5

It's in the city but not downtown.

KellyAlzan

Oh, I didn’t realize e downtown has a separate law enforcement agency. What s it called? ‘Downtown PD’?

DickD

Rb just likes to challenge others, whether it makes sense or not.

DickD

It is not Market Street, but it off Fairview and only about 0.5 miles west of Market and very close to the hospital and Hood College.

rmaghan1

If you truly believe that then who’s really the racist?

rmaghan1

Tragic. Thoughts and prayers to the victims and their loved ones. I know the dedicated detectives with the FPD will work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.

Ystj

This is sad. Hope they catch these idiots. The police and churches need to start talking about this. Parents need to start telling their kids to walk away from danger. It all starts at home. Let’s say a prayer for these families.

rmaghan1

All valid points. Very sad to see this crime in what used to be a quiet and decent community.

KR999

Fifty years ago most of the crime in Frederick was limited to a very few, select neighborhoods. You’re right, these days what were once quiet, decent communities are now danger spots.

DickD

The people going to church are not the ones committing the crimes.

KellyAlzan

Ever since FCSO swept the cactus flats homicide under the rug, this sort of criminal behavior has skyrocketed.

KR999

If you knew anything about criminal investigation, you would know that some cases take years to solve and some never get solved.

KellyAlzan

Thanks. But, that’s not the case with this cas

KR999

It appears you’re familiar with this incident. Maybe you could tell us then, what is the case with this case? What do you know that we don’t, and why do you keep bring up the fact that no suspects have been taken into custody yet?

rmaghan1

Kelly knows everything about everything.

KR999

That’s been my impression, rmaghan1. I wonder if he/she will answer my questions or just sidestep around them.......

Samanthapowers

thanks for the insight on criminal investigations, nancy drew.

KellyAlzan

Welp, I had been suspecting KR999 as being cdreid. Like I always say, you can change your user name, but you can’t change your writing style. Welcome back Mr Reid!! What happened to you?? Anyone care to guess how I know KR999 is CD? LOL

BunnyLou

Always blaming Chuck, your obsession with him boarders on sickness. Looks to me like this is an FPD case, so if you got a beef talk to the chief.

KR999

[thumbup][thumbup][thumbup]

rmaghan1

Always criticizing the police. Why don’t you start being solutions instead of problems? A man was killed and a woman is critical and you use this as an opportunity to knock the police? Shameful

pretzel

Just keep cramming people in Frederick and this will become just an every day article

mrnatural1

My thoughts exactly pretzel. That's why I'm looking for the crime stats. It sure seems like the rate of violent crime has increased dramatically, starting when the development began to pick up steam in the late 1980s or early '90s. I would like to find stats that confirm that.

pilot25

And electing the same liberal philosophies that have brought down Chicago, Baltimore, SF, LA, Portland, Seattle, etc.... Show me a city in decay and there is a liberal appointee or elected official at every level of government.

KR999

Sadly, so very true. One would think the citizens of those cities would wise up and vote those officials out, but those same officials have brainwashed the citizens into right where they want them. And it’s coming to Frederick, sooner or later.

kstr92

It has ALREADY become an everyday occurrence.

KellyAlzan

I see Spring Ridge becoming a lot of section 8 housing. I’m being serious. And Urbana. It’s hundreds of acres of town houses. Townhouses eventually become section 8’s.

Dwasserba

Section 8 is intended for the elderly and working poor. Every group has bad apples. Promoting a stigma is no help to those who deserve the help.

mrnatural1

Does anyone know if violent crime stats exist for Frederick County (as opposed to the entire state of Maryland, or the nation)?

saogirl52

Yes they do, although they might not be quite current. Check UCR reports for Frederick City. These are uniform crime reports sent to the Feds Crimes are broken down as Part 1 or Part 2. Google it.

rmaghan1

https://www.cityoffrederick.com/484/Crime-Stats And on the national level https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/ucr

Funshine

Wouldn't it be great if the reporters at the newspaper would do this kind of work, like digging through crime stats, instead of a front page article from a weird strip club not even in our county?
