A person died Wednesday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at a supermarket in Spring Ridge, according to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
The deceased, whom deputies did not identify, shot themselves in a restroom of the Weis Markets store on Spring Ridge Parkway.
Sheriff’s office Sgt. Robert Deckhut said the call came in just before 5 p.m. The store closed shortly thereafter, he said. He did not know how long it would remain closed.
He did not immediately know whether customers heard a gunshot.
Kevin Illiano, who works at New York J&P Pizza in the same shopping center as the Weis, saw firetrucks and police cars show up and could tell that something was unusual.
“When I approached the scene, a [Weis] employee walked past me crying,” he said. “When I asked him what happened, he said someone committed suicide. I went into the grocery store and I learned from another employee that apparently it was from a gunshot wound.
“It could have happened in our bathroom,” he added. “It could have happened in our building.”
He said he was in shock and that this is unusual for the neighborhood.
“It’s sad that someone had to take their life,” he said. “I’m just so sad.”
The case is under investigation, and no further details were immediately available.
