Six area sports figures are slated for induction into the YMCA of Frederick County’s Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall of Fame in January.
David Reaver (baseball), Jeff Comer (multi-sport), Gail Gaeng (Paralympics), Phil Hammond (tennis), Rick Conner (Linganore football coach) and Yuri Suguiyama (swimming) will be inducted at the annual awards banquet at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, at the YMCA home on North Market Street in Frederick.
Reaver played high school baseball at Linganore, then later, played professional baseball in the New York Mets’ organization. Comer played high school football, basketball and ran track at Thomas Johnson High School.
Conner, the current head football coach at Linganore High School, has led the Lancers to three state championships in a head coaching career for the Lancers spanning 18 years.
Hammond, the former head tennis coach at Mount St. Mary’s, was a top-ranked men’s amateur tennis player in the region. Gaeng plays wheelchair basketball in for a semi-pro team in Chicago.
Suguiyama, a former swimming standout at Urbana, won four Frederick County Public Schools and has served as an Olympic coach for Team USA.
In addition to the annual induction ceremony, the Quinn hall will recognize Middletown girls basketball standout Saylor Poffenbarger as a Hall of Fame Rising Star Award-winner. It’s a new award, to an individual or team, whose ages are no older than 19, that have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments and contributions in their athletic field, and has brought honor to self and Frederick County during the past year.
Tickets for the banquet are available on a first come first served basis at the YMCA after Jan. 2, 2020.
