Facing tremendous pressure — typical in any penalty-kick shootout — Roby, a goalkeeper, turned back the first two River Hill shots, setting the stage for the Bears’ 2-1 (4-3) win over nationally-ranked River Hill in Saturday’s Class 2A state championship at Loyola University’s Ridley Athletic Complex. It’s the third boys state soccer crown in school history.
Trinity Burge, Urbana, volleyball
Burge had 18 kills, 17 assists and 14 digs, leading the Hawks to a 25-12, 31-29, 25-21 victory over Eleanor Roosevelt in the Class 4A state semifinals at University of Maryland’s Ritchie Coliseum in College Park. Urbana advanced to its first state final in volleyball.
Oakdale’s football team ended Damascus’ 53-game winning streak — the longest in the nation — with a 24-7 win over the Hornets on Friday in the Class 2A West final at Damascus.
Linganore’s football team took one more step toward another state championship Friday, defeating Westminster 52-20 in the Class 3A West final at Linganore.
Daniel Ivanov converted the fourth-and-deciding penalty kick for Oakdale’s boys soccer team in Saturday’s 2-1 (4-3) win over River Hill in the Class 2A state boys championship.
Walkersville’s girls soccer team, in the state championship match for the first time in school history, lost a 1-0 decision to River Hill on Friday in the Class 2A state title match at Loyola University’s Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore.
