Boys JD Nelson, Middletown, football
Nelson’s nudge of Walkersville’s Josiah Jones at the Knights’ 1-yard line on fourth and 9 in overtime was enough to keep Jones out of the end zone, ensuring Middletown’s 41-34 win over the Lions in the second round of the Class 2A West playoffs on Friday.
Girls Jess Twilley, Oakdale, volleyball
Twilley had 12 digs with seven kills and five aces, leading the Bears in a 3-0 sweep of La Plata in the Class 2A state semifinals on Wednesday at University of Maryland’s Ritchie Coliseum in College Park.
• Travis Fields and Carson Sickeri each had three touchdowns for Catoctin’s football team in a 47-6 win over Boonsboro in the second round of the Class 1A West playoffs on Friday.
• Linganore’s football team moved on in the Class 3A West playoffs on Friday, defeating Rockville, 43-12.
• Middletown’s girls soccer team battled with Calvert through regulation before falling to the Cavaliers, 2-1, in the final minute of the second overtime period in the Class 2A state championship match on Saturday at Loyola University’s Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore.
• The Oakdale volleyball team’s bid for a third Class 2A state championship in school history fell short on Saturday. The Bears were defeated by Century, 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, at Ritchie Coliseum.
