Johan Klausen, Brunswick, tennis
Klausen, a foreign exchange student from Sweden, defeated Francis Scott Key’s Brandon Bimestefer 7-5, 6-4 Saturday in the Class 1A West boys singles region final at Baker Park. In doing so, he became the first Brunswick tennis player to win a region title since Gretchen Unger did so for the Railroader girls in 1999.
Alexis Stone, Brunswick, softball
Stone's RBI double in the top of the seventh inning drove in the go-ahead run, setting up the Railroaders' 3-1 win over Allegany on Friday in the Class 1A West championship game at Kemp's Mill Softball Complex in Williamsport. It's the first regional softball championship for the Railroaders in school history.
Thomas Johnson's Trevor Yusko pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 and walking one as the Patriots beat the Owls 2-0 in the the Class 3A West baseball championship game Friday to win their second straight region title.
Oakdale's boys track and field team continued its march toward another Class 2A state championship, winning the Class 2A West championship Friday at Oakdale High School.
Middletown's baseball team won its second Class 2A West baseball championship on Friday, defeating Oakdale 9-6.
The Middletown and Linganore softball teams won regional championships on Friday. The Knights defeated Oakdale 8-1 on a one-hitter from Victoria McClain for the Class 2A West crown. The Lancers defeated Manchester Valley 8-5 to win the 3A West title.
Linganore's boys and Frederick's girls track and field teams won championships at the Class 3A West meet on Wednesday at Manchester Valley High School.
Urbana's boys and girls tennis teams swept the titles at the Frederick County Public Schools Championships on Tuesday at Thomas Johnson High School.
Urbana's girls track and field team won the Class 4A North championship on Saturday at Patapsco High School.
