Kyle Lund, Oakdale, cross country
The Bears' senior set a course record in winning the Class 2A state individual boys championship at Hereford High School on Saturday. Lund crossed the finish line in 15 minutes, 47.61 seconds. It surpassed the previous mark set by River Hill's Anish Nanjappa of 15:58.08, set last year. Lund's effort led Oakdale to the Class 2A boys team title as well.
Erin McQuitty, Middletown, cross country
McQuitty finished her freshman year of cross country by winning the Class 2A state individual girls crown on Saturday. Her time was 19:06.75.
Oakdale's golf team edged county-rival Linganore on the fourth playoff hole for the school's first state golf title on Monday at University of Maryland's golf course in College Park. The Bears won the Class 2A state championship.
Despite a strong second-round effort, Urbana's golf team fell two shots shy of repeating its Class 4A-3A state championship on Monday. Churchill edged the Hawks, and Wootton, 603-605.
Carson Sickeri and Jake Baker combined for five touchdowns in Catoctin's 53-6 win over Southern of Garrett in the first round of the Class 1A West football playoffs on Friday. Sickeri had three touchdowns. Baker had two.
Leo McDonald, a senior nose tackle for Walkersville's football team, who missed all of last seasoon with a concussion, stopped a potential game-winning 2-point conversion by Oakdale, giving the Lions a 28-17 win over the reigning Class 2A state-champion Bears on Friday.
Tuscarora's Caleigh Bernota had nine kills, including the match-winne,r on Wednesday, giving the Titans their first regional volleyball championship with a 3-0 sweep of North Hagerstown.
Oakdale's field hockey team, in the state field hockey championship game for the first time in school history, lost a heart-breaking, 1-0 decision to Marriotts Ridge in the Class 2A state championship game on Saturday at Washington College.
