MPSSAA football trophy

The MPSSAA football trophy is hoisted by Middletown players in 2013 after their third straight 2A championship.

Two intracounty matchups highlight a week of first-round playoff football games that involve an eye-popping eight Frederick County teams, which learned their postseason opponents Sunday when the MPSSAA revealed the regional brackets for a tournament that was revamped last spring to double the number of participants.

All six games that include local teams will be played at 7 p.m. Friday.

Top-seeded Linganore (8-1) hosts No. 8 seed Frederick (4-5) in Class 3A West action. The Lancers seek to add to their county-best total of six state titles, while this is the Cadets’ first playoff berth since 2004.

Another top seeded team, Middletown (7-2), hosts No. 8 Seneca Valley in the 2A West.

Elsewhere in 2A West, No. 5 Walkersville (6-3) visits No. 4 Oakdale (6-3), the defending state champion. The Bears defeated the Lions 23-20 on Oct. 26.

Catoctin (8-1) landed the top seed in the 1A West, and it gets a first-round visit from No. 8 Southern Garrett (3-6). The Cougars won their lone state title in 2009.

Also in 1A West, No. 7 Brunswick (4-5) heads to No. 2 Fort Hill, as the Railroaders make their first playoff appearance since 2012.

In the Class 4A West, No. 5 Urbana (6-3) travels to face No. 4 Walter Johnson (7-2). The Hawks last reached the playoffs in 2014.

The 3 way tiebreaker between Liberty, Oakdale, and Walkersville appears to have been applied correctly according to the Football bulletin and the Section I tournament bulletin. Since 3 teams were tied, and Liberty and Oakdale did not play, bonus points were the first tiebreaker. That was only used to determine the highest seeded of the tied teams, as Section I bulletin indicates. Then Oakdale and Walkersville are re-evaluated starting with first criteria.

Correct, yes, fair, no. If you were just looking at two teams you would say Walkersville beat Liberty and is better. Also, looking at just two teams Oakdale beat Walkersville and can be considered better.

So, based on a different way of ranking, Oakdale would be seeded third, Walkersvile 4th and Liberty fifth. Now it might be to Walkersville's advantage to be fifth because now they will play a lower ranked team than Middletown.

It is not that they didn't go by their rules in their seeding, it is how they set up the rules. Of course, many arguments can be made as to the proper way and the way they did it is not real bad - except in this instance.

Linganore should win.

Walkersville vs. Oakdale is probably the most evenly matched game. Oakdale will be a slight favorite, but this game can go either way.

I wish Brunswick the best, but playing Ft. Hill,, at Ft. Hill is no easy task.

Middletown vs. Seneca Valley is a mismatch. Middletown should easily win.

Does anyone think ranking Liberty over Walkersville is a travesty, besides me? Walkersville beat them 27 to 7,during the regular season.
