County Track

Urbana’s Mary Miller, right, leads the girls 3,200-meter run followed by teammates Brin Strouse and Sara Jarman. Miller went on to win the race.

A mess.

That’s how Urbana’s Mary Miller described her sophomore cross-country season.

“It was awful. Like as low as you can get, that was me,” she said. “But something told me, I need to get back out there. I’m not going to end my running career like this.”

With that mind, she trained. And each year, she identified at least one teammate who could and would hold her accountable.

And now that she’s a senior, Miller’s high school running career is ending on the kind of high notes that make her early cross-country struggles a distant memory.

Take what she did on Monday at the Frederick County Public Schools track and field championships at Frederick High School.

Competing in the final county meet event of her career, Miller won the 3,200-meter run, providing another highlight for an Urbana team that captured its fifth straight county girls team title.

Just like the Hawks girls, Oakdale’s boys team maintained its dominance, winning its fourth straight county team crown.

To repeatedly claim such titles, programs need more than just a few stars. They need a culture in which older athletes set a standard for younger ones to meet.

Miller benefited from such things in her career, so it’s not surprising that she devotes energy to supporting her teammates.

“She is a teammate that these girls will never have again,” Hawks coach C.J. Ecalono said. “She gives it her all at practices and wants the absolute best for anyone and everyone on our team.”

Such a mindset is evident at meets, when Miller is often tempted to cheer on teammates.

“I actually have to tell her, when you’re not running, you can’t be running around the track cheering on your teammates because you’ll drain yourself out,” Ecalono said. “You need to go underneath the canopy as much as you can.”

But after her final event on Monday, the 3,200, Miller didn’t have to conserve energy. Instead, she stood near the finish line for the remainder of the race, offering hand slaps and hugs to other runners — even from other schools — as they finished.

She even poured a cup of cold water over the head of a Linganore runner who had just given her all on a hot day.

Figuring this was the last time she’d be competing against many of these girls, Miller wanted to savor the moment.

“To me, that means more than any medal, any ribbon or any time I could hit,” she said. “I mean, eventually I’m going to forget about all my PRs. But just getting to know everyone, getting those memories, that’s definitely what’s going to last.”

Miller was just one of many who came up big for the Hawks on Monday. Ella Auderset won the 1,600 and 800 runs, Lili Morrell won the 300 hurdles with a national qualifying time of 44.75 seconds, Payton Bohrer won the pole vault and the 4x800 relay team of Michaela Garvey, Sophia Csulak, Caitlyn Hardy and Emily McDonnell won.

The Hawks picked up plenty of additional points from athletes like Piper Jons. The junior, who took up track last year to build endurance for soccer, said Morrell and Susannah Auderset helped her make progress.

“I don’t know what I would do without them,” she said.

Urbana won the girls team title with 173 points, and second-place Tuscarora had 129.

Oakdale won the boys team crown with 181 points, and second-place Linganore had 103.

The Bears added to their tally on the meet’s final event, when Erik Starks won the pole vault by clearing 15 feet.

Earlier, they got wins from Kyle Lund in the 1,600 and 800 runs, Evan Schaefer in the 400 run, the 4x400 relay team of Haran Nadarajah, Charles Parrott, Jonah Childress and Joshua Malone, the 4x200 relay team of Simeon Sabvute, Childress, Ronald Robinson and Isaiah Watkins, and the 4x800 relay team of Lee Goodson, Parrott, Nicholas Stokes and Lund.

Titles have been piling up for the Bears, who won state boys team crowns at the last year’s outdoor meet and this year’s indoor meet.

Nadarajah, a senior, prizes such things.

“We really emphasize on winning as a team, like how state championships are won from the bottom up, and not just people winning,” said Nadarajah, who won a state 300 hurdles title last year.

He said the Bears hope to contend for another state crown this month, giving them three in their last three meets.
