Brunswick boys singles player Johan Klausen and Oakdale girls singles player Rani Jones will play in state championship matches after both cruised through the quarterfinals and semifinals during the Class 2A-1A state tennis tournament at the Wilde Lake Tennis Center on Thursday.

Klausen, a Swedish foreign exchange student, opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over McDonough’s Jason Haley in the 1A quarterfinals, then defeated Carver’s Evan Vezjagic 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals.

Klausen faces Frederick Douglass’ Brian Wilson in Saturday’s Class 1A state championship match on Saturday.

Jones defeated Glenelg’s Mia Stamatakis 6-0, 6-0 in the 2A quarterfinals before beating Kent Island’s Celina Kaufman 6-0, 6-0 in the semis.

Jones faces Marriotts Ridge’s Kallista Liu in her 2A state title match on Saturday.

All Saturday finals and consolation-round matches begin at 10 a.m.

Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds in Class 4A and Class 3A are being held at 10 a.m. on Friday.

BASEBALL

MABC Classic on Monday

The 14th annual Mid-Atlantic Baseball Classic is being held at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium on Monday.

The event features some of the best senior high school baseball talent in the region.

Two games are scheduled for Monday. The Diamond Stars Game begins at noon, followed by the MABC Elite Game at 3 p.m.

LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL

Frederick National to host states

Frederick National Little League will host this year’s Little League (10-12) state tournament at Robert B. Staley Stadium, July 20-27. The 10-12 division is the main division of Little League Baseball, the most recognized youth sports organization in the world.

The state tournament rotates from district to district each year. Frederick National is part of District 2. The last time the state tournament was in District 2 was 2012, hosted by Brunswick.

Frederick National last hosted the state tournament in 2005.
