Frederick County boasts three No. 1 seeds for the upcoming regional baseball tournament and one for the softball tournament after the MPSSAA released its postseason brackets Tuesday.

The top-seeded local baseball teams are Linganore (Class 3A West, Section II), Middletown (2A West, Section II) and Catoctin (1A West, Section II). Meanwhile, Catoctin’s softball team is the top seed in 1A West, Section II.

All four of those teams, along with six other county baseball and softball teams, received first-round byes into the sectional semifinals.

First-round action for both sports begins Thursday.


Urbana is second-seeded in 4A North, Section II, and hosts the first-round winner between Springbrook and Paint Branch on Saturday.

In 3A West, Section II, Linganore has a bye before facing the winner of Thursday’s Tuscarora at North Hagerstown matchup. The semifinal will be on Saturday at Linganore. Second-seeded TJ advances to host a Saturday semifinal between the winner of Thursday’s game between South Hagerstown and host Frederick, which is the No. 3 seed.

In 2A West, Section I, No. 3 Oakdale has a bye before traveling to No. 2 South Carroll on Saturday. In Section II, top-seeded Middletown advances to take on Thursday’s Walkersville at Poolesville winner. That sectional semifinal will be Saturday at Middletown.

In 1A West, Section II, the winner of Thursday’s FSK at Brunswick matchup advances to face top-seeded Catoctin on Saturday at Catoctin.


Second-seeded Urbana has a first-round bye in 4A North, Section II. The Hawks will host either Blair or Springbrook on Monday in the semifinals.

In 3A West, Section II, No. 2 Linganore has a bye to host the winner of an intracity matchup. Frederick travels to TJ on Thursday for the right to play the Lancers in the semifinals. Meanwhile, South Hagerstown visits Tuscarora in the first round Thursday.

In 2A West, Section I, No. 3 Oakdale has a bye before traveling Monday to No. 2 Winters Mill. In Section II, Walkersville travels Thursday to Middletown for a first-round meeting.

In 1A West, Section II, No. 1 Catoctin advances to a Monday semifinal against the winner between Francis Scott Key and Clear Spring. Meanwhile, No. 3 Brunswick hosts Smithsburg on Thursday in the first round.
