Thomas Johnson has forfeited its upcoming varsity football game against Oakdale, TJ athletic director Mike Chavez said in an email to the News-Post Monday.

The Patriots were scheduled to host the Bears at 6:30 p.m. Friday in a Week 3 game, and this marks the second straight game TJ has forfeited due to a limited number of available players — and the second time in nine years a Frederick County public school varsity football team has forfeited as many as two games in a season.

Having just 14 players deemed prepared to play in Week 2 and being particularly shorthanded on the offensive line, TJ forfeited a road game at Tuscarora last week.

Chavez said the Patriots will make decisions regarding whether or not the football team can play future games, including a Week 4 contest against Walkersville, on a week-to-week basis.

The Patriots lost their season opener to Middletown, 49-0, on Sept. 6.
