A trio of Frederick County football teams will continue their quests for state championships Friday at 7 p.m., as the MPSSAA released the schedule for this week’s state semifinals.

Two of the semifinals will be played in the county.

In Class 3A, second-seeded Linganore (11-1) hosts No. 3 Mervo (12-0) in hopes of earning its 13th berth in a state championship game (the Lancers have won a county-best six state titles).

Second-seeded Catoctin (11-1) hosts defending state champion and No. 3 Fort Hill (11-1) in a 1A clash. The Cougars seek to return to the state final for the first time since they won their first state crown in 2009.

Middletown (10-2) hits the road for a 2A showdown that pits the No. 6 Knights against No. 2 Elkton (12-0) in Cecil County. Middletown seeks its first state title and finals appearance since completing a three-peat in 2013.

There's no 2A number 1 seed, which was Douglas. Douglas was beaten by New Town in over time 3 to 0. New Town, the number 8 seed will play Potomac, , the number 5 seed.

Elkton is the number 2 seed and unbeaten. Middletown beat the number 3 seed, unbeaten N. Caroline, last week, 28 to 14.

Elkton beat Oakdale 31 to 14.

Middletown beat Oakdale 27 to 7.

Middletown would be undefeated except for two losses of 7 points each. One to Linganore a 3 A team playing in the 3 A state semi fin also an 4 A team that lost already in the 4 A playoffs. Looking at points for and against Elkton would be a 18 point favorite, but their strength of schedule was not as strong.

Based on the same team that both played, Oakdale, I feel Middletown should win.

As Middletown only allowed 14 points by N. Caroline, also undefeated, it would appear Middletown is likely to win by 7. .Predictions mean nothing, but Middletown will have their best receiver, Brian Walker back. He didn't play against N. Caroline. Brian is also a very good defensive player.

Wow. Is that all you got? Frederick County football is HISTORICALLY good, having 3 different teams in the state semifinals. Hopefully there is more reporting to come, other than the weekly prophets/capsules.
