WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Austin Hays had a huge day at the plate for the Frederick Keys in the first game of a doubleheader against the Potomac Nationals on Wednesday, but it was not enough to prevent the Keys from being swept by the Nationals.
Hays belted three home runs in the first game of the twinbill at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium, bringing his total for the year to eight. However, Potomac won the first game 11-7, then took the second game 7-4.
Hays had a leadoff shot in the first, then had solo blasts in the fourth and fifth. All three homers were off Potomac starter Hector Silvestre (4-1).
The Nationals used big innings in each game to pull away for the win.
The Keys held a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning of the first game before the Nats scored seven in the bottom of the fifth to overtake Frederick. In the second game of the twinbill, Potomac jumped to a 5-0 lead in the fourth, then held off a Keys rally in the seventh.
Ryan Mountcastle, Yermin Mercedes and Shane Hoeschler all had two hits for the Keys in the first game. Mercedes, Ademar Rifaela and Josh Hart doubled. Alex Katz (0-1) took the loss.
Alex Murphy had a solo home run in the second game for Frederick. It was his fifth homer of the season. Steve Laurino had two hits.
Cristian Alvarado (2-5) was Frederick’s starter, but he was tagged for five earned runs and six hits through 3 1-3 innings. Reliever Luis Gonzalez pitched a strong 1 2-3 innings in relief with no earned runs and five strikeouts.
