WILMINGTON, Del. — The Wilmington Blue Rocks used a multi-run fifth inning in both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday night to defeat the Frederick Keys, 7-3, 3-2, at Frawley Stadium.
In the first game, Yermin Mercedes hit his first Carolina League home run, while in the second game, Trevor Belicek gave up just two hits in four innings.
Glenn Sparkman (1-0) and Todd Eaton retired 17 of the final 18 Keys batters after the Mercedes homer. Sparkman went six innings, gave up three hits on four hits, and struck out four in his first win with Wilmington since he was Carolina League Pitcher of the Year in 2014.
In the second game, Steve Wilkerson had an RBI double in the first, his 25th RBI of the season. The Keys left nine on base and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
The Keys continue their four-game series on Wednesday, with Frederick’s Lucas Long (6-6, 4.16) oppsoing Matt Tenuta (5-8, 5.53).
