The Salem Red Sox pulled away from the Frederick Keys with a three-run fifth inning on Thursday for an 8-4 win at Haley Toyota Field in Salem, Virginia.
The Red Sox (21-42) rocked Keys starter Blaine Knight (0-3) for nine hits and all eight Salem runs in 4 2-3 innings. Relievers Reed Hayes and Juan Echevarria combined to shut out the Red Sox the rest of the way.
Jomar Reyes led Frederick (29-36) with three hits, including a pair of doubles. Cole Billingsley had three hits with a double for the Keys, who pounded out 13 hits against two Salem pitchers, but the Red Sox stranded 13 Frederick baserunners.
Ryan Ripken also doubled for the Keys.
The teams play a doubleheader Friday night, starting at 6 p.m.
