Editor’s Note: This is an update on the progress of TJ grad Branden Kline, who is a rookie right-handed relief pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles:
Kline entered Saturday’s game to start the fourth inning, with the Orioles trailing 9-1. He pitched a scoreless fourth, despite seeing leadoff hitter George Springer reach on an error by third baseman Jace Peterson. Kline got Jose Altuve to ground into a double play, then induced a groundout by Michael Brantley.
But in the fifth, Kline gave up four runs on four hits and one walk. Alex Bregman led off with a ground rule double to right, and Yuli Gurriel and Springer also doubled.
After giving up basehits to the first two batters he faced in the sixth, Kline was replaced by Tayler Scott. He gave up five earned runs on six hits.
