Should that expat American have to pay income taxes in both their country of residence and the US, if they are not enjoying the amenities of the US? Should a US company have to pay income taxes on profits for goods sold overseas, when the goods are not available for sale in the US?

Agreed shiftless. Too many kids come out of school without understanding basic household finances, including the effects of compound interest on loans. Knowing how to cook a meal, fix a leaky pipe, calk a drafty window, unclog a sink/toilet, etc. should be common knowledge.

Mr. Buchanan makes some good points, and raises good questions. It's cheaper to manufacture in China due to their level of taxation and labor rates, then import into the US, than it is to manufacture here in the first place. Simply, China out-competes us in that regard.
